THE SOCIAL SPOT: TALLULA'S8.21.2018BY THE SOCIAL ARENA
With the success of iconic Santa Monica restaurants like Huckleberry Bakery & Cafe, Cassia, and Milo + Olive, husband and wife restauranteurs Josh Loeb and Zoe Nathan have become household names around Los Angeles. But why stop there? The opening of Tallula’s in May 2017, has proven to be yet another win for the popular duo and their Rustic Canyon Family of Restaurant group.
Housed in a former Japanese restaurant with pagoda exteriors dating back to 1984, Tallula’s is as much a design adventure as it is culinary. The colorful interior is markedly casual and comfortable yet charming, with its vibrant turquoise and pink walls, funky textiles, macrame plant hangers, and boho beach vibes – all reminiscent of Tulum, Mexico. It’s the perfect gathering spot, as the space offers both indoor and outdoor dining options, as well as a private room for groups that has its own bar and bathroom. As for the menu? Fresh Mexican-American fare with local produce sourced from the Santa Monica Farmers Market and only sustainably sourced meats and seafood – signature of Rustic Canyon Family’s restaurants.
Although the menu changes seasonally, you’ll find a delicious selection of Mexican dishes with a fresh California twist, ranging from small plates like arroz poblana with toasted green rice, market vegetables, and spicy aoili, and chile fundida with queso oaxaca, rio zape beans, and tortilla chips, to large plates like organic turkey enchiladas with chile rojo sauce, quinoa, shaved cabbage, and cotija cheese, and a roasted organic half chicken with fig mole, fingerling potatoes, squash, tomato, and duck fat flour tortillas. And because it would be blasphemous to leave a Rustic Canyon restaurant without ordering a dessert by Zoe Nathan, you might find yourself torn between the tres leches cake with honey, chamomile, and fresh berries, and the coconut brown rice pudding served with sautéed apples and pears, crème fraiche, pomegranate, and cayenne pepper. Trust us when we say, you can’t go wrong with either. Or both. ), Cassia, and Milo & Olive, husband and wife restauranteurs Josh Loeb and Zoe Nathan have become household names around Los Angeles.
