THE SOCIAL SPOT: IT'S ALWAYS SUMMER AT SALT AIR7.24.2018BY THE SOCIAL ARENA
Endless sunshine, beautiful beaches, that perpetual feeling like you’re on vacation… few restaurants capture the Los Angeles of peoples’ imaginations quite like Salt Air. Blocks from Venice beach on the iconic Abbot Kinney Blvd., the bistro-style restaurant has been charming locals since 2013 thanks to Dave & Patti Reiss (the duo behind Westside favorites like Sunny Spot, The Brig, and A-Frame), serving seasonal seafood-inspired dishes amidst a backdrop of white brick walls, marble tables, and an open kitchen.
Though inspired by its beachside roots, Salt Air’s menu isn’t as casual – or simple – as the flip-flop wearing locals who breeze by its façade. Having settled into his position for the past year, Executive Chef Patrick Costa embraces the abundance of seasonal produce Southern California has to offer, drawing on farmers market finds and his work and travels in France and Thailand for inspiration. His creativity consistently shines in the ever-changing selection, meaning diners are wise to order inspired dishes like the Steelhead Trout Toast with Yuzu Kosho, Ninja radish, market chilis, and Thai basil on a brioche or the Pea Tartine with smashed peas, goat cheese, and lemon when they see it on the menu – because they might not be there next time.
The vacation vibes don’t stop at the globally-inspired cuisine. The nautical hip (can we claim that as a new style?) interior is replete with navy striped pillows, a giant silver marlin, and images of maps lining the walls that stir up intense feelings of wanderlust. So next time you’re looking for a little respite from the more grueling parts of the city (you know, the real Los Angeles), consider a voyage to Salt Air. It’ll be the best, shortest vacation you’ve ever had – trust.
